HIV treatments using drugs

HIV Cures?

Researchers can envision a time in which every type of genetic alteration that causes cancer will be known. The Cancer Genome Atlas, an NIH project, is scaling up to study the genetic causes of more than 20 of the most common forms of cancer. Researchers who have been struggling to cure HIV infections, have come up against a difficult barrier. It seems that despite the type of HAART and length of time it's used, HIV persists deep within the body in lymph nodes and tissues.

Healthcare workers rely on a CD4 count when making decisions about how HIV-positive patients should be treated and when they should begin antiretroviral therapy. The new test would enable patients to find out within minutes if they should begin antiretroviral treatment. Health care providers should initiate empiric antiviral treatment as soon as possible. Waiting for laboratory confirmation of influenza to begin treatment with antiviral drugs is not necessary.

Treatment adherence (making sure to take every pill as prescribed by doctors) is critically important to successful treatment of HIV, because missing even a few doses gives the HIV virus an opportunity to develop immunity to the medication. Poor adherence is related to worse medical outcomes, but even a small, 10% improvement rate in adherence may improve these outcomes. Treatment criteria have evolved since 1997, when HAART became available, but currently most HIV experts agree that anyone with a CD4 cell count below 350 per cubic milliliter of blood should start HAART. CD4 cells, immune cells that are a favorite target of HIV, are slowly destroyed as the disease progresses. Treatment was vastly expanded with coverage tripling from 400,000 people in December 2003 to 1.3 million in December 2005. This included an eight-fold increase in sub-Saharan Africa.

Patients need to be made aware that it?s wise to stay healthy by eating well and staying active - and this means low sugar, low fat diets. They also need to be monitored for metabolic changes and treated, as appropriate.? Patients with both tuberculosis and HIV will get treatment if their CD4 count is 350 or less, compared to 200 now, which means  HIV treatment would start earlier. Pregnant women who are HIV-positive also would start treatment earlier.

Patients become reinfected because the HIV in their system feeds from a reservoir of the virus contained within a cell, which acts as a sanctuary for the virus. For reasons unknown until now, these sanctuaries were unaffected by antiretroviral therapy. Patients should address specific medical concerns with their physicians. Patients who do get confirmed with AIDS just consider this as an extended life sentence. I mean just consider what would have happened if you had got diagnosed with the disease?

Doctors have been successful in curing a 43 year old patient who was suffering from AIDS and leukaemia. According to doctors this type of treatment will be common within next five years (2014). Doctors and patients may be inclined to begin drug therapy as soon as possible to fend off full-blown AIDS, noted Matt Bailey, an assistant professor of management at Bucknell University. But the common treatment for HIV - a combination of medicines known as "a cocktail" -- comes with its own set of side effects that diminish patients' quality of life, Bailey said.

Stavudine is still widely used in first-line therapy in developing countries due to its low cost and widespread availability. Zidovudine (AZT) or Tenofovir (TDF) are recommended as less toxic and equally effective alternatives.
